Complete Guide to Caring for a New Tattoo in Summer
Congratulations on your new tattoo! The healing process is a critical phase that defines the final quality, brightness, and longevity of your design. Getting a tattoo during the summer season in Mallorca requires special precautions due to heat, intense sun, and saltwater.
Here are the official recommendations by Enzo Paez for optimal healing.
1. The Protective Film (Second Skin)
If we applied a transparent adhesive protective patch (such as Dermalize or Saniderm):
- Duration: Keep it on for the first 24 to 48 hours.
- Protection: This patch acts as a barrier against bacteria and dirt while allowing the skin to breathe.
- Removal: Peel it off gently under lukewarm running water to soften the adhesive. Do not pull hard.
2. Daily Cleaning and Hygiene
Once the protective film is removed:
- Washing: Wash the tattoo gently with your hands using lukewarm water and pH-neutral, fragrance-free soap. Do not use sponges or washcloths.
- Drying: Pat it dry gently with a clean paper towel. Never rub.
- Moisturizing: Apply a very thin layer of recommended aftercare ointment (e.g., Bepanthol Tattoo) 3 times a day. Do not suffocate the tattoo with cream.
3. What to Avoid at All Costs
During the first 15 to 20 days:
- ❌ Direct Sunlight: The sun will burn fresh pigment, weaken your skin, and ruin fine line or realism details.
- ❌ Beaches and Pools: Chlorine and sea salt contain bacteria and chemical agents that can lead to infection or discoloration.
- ❌ Excessive Sweating: Avoid intense workouts at the gym during the first 5 days.
4. Long-Term Maintenance
Once fully healed (after the first month):
- Always use SPF 50+ sunscreen when exposing the tattoo to the sun. This preserves deep blacks and crisp lines for years to come.
